The term Emo comes from the culture of punk and pop music. Emo style is now hugely influenced by the Indie scene. Emo's are generally recognised through their fashion and unique hair styles. Black is the chosen colour for emo's. This not only includes the colour of their hair and clothes, but also extends to such items as black nail polish and black eyeliner--for girls and guys. Emo hairstyle is a big player in creating the appearance and identity of a male emo.

The Fringe

A popular look for a short emo style for males is a fringe. For a fringe, the hair will need to be different lengths, shorter in the back and longer in the front. If the hair grows below the nape of the neck, it is too long. The front of the hair needs to be long enough to be straightened and styled. The fringe can be straightened to one side, covering half of one eye or straightened on both sides to form a full fringe.

Spiky Back

Keeping the hair spiky at the back of the head is another style of emo hair. Usually the hair at the front of the head stays longer than any other part of the hair. If the front fringe stays long, it creates a balanced contrast if the back is spiky.

Abandon all rules when it comes to cuts and styles and create a unique style by taking a pair of choppy scissors and hacking away at the hair to create different lengths and ends. To finish off the look, simply straighten the hair and add some styling products. This could be a strong hold look where the hair is spiky on all sides, or a flat look where the hair is gelled down closer to the head.

Dye the Hair

A quick way to create an emo rocker look would be to dye the hair. The common emo hair colour is black. Make it even more unique and fresh by combining black with another colour to create highlights or streaks. Other popular choices of colour are red and blonde.
