Although hair care advertisements and marketing often target teenagers and young adults, women of all ages want and can enjoy the versatility and benefits of creating special and flattering hairstyles. In fact, as women age, they often feel liberated of the need to spend hours on their appearance; instead, they learn to achieve a flattering look in much less time, with a few products already stocked in the home.

The Knot

Older women who have medium to long hair can benefit from the knot hairstyle for a few reasons. First, it scoops hair back off the face, drawing attention to the eyes, lips and even pretty eyeglasses. Second, a knot can mask age-related hair loss. For example, if a woman is suffering from hair loss toward the back of her head, the knot style naturally masks it. To create a knot, blow dry your hair, then hold it in one hand (place a small rubber band around that wrist). With the other hand, grab the hair and twist it--no need to be perfect, the knot benefits from a tousled, casual look. Once you have the hair in a twisty knot, grasp the rubber band around your other wrist and slide it over the hair. If your hair is thinning in spots, finger-comb your hair over those places; the knot will keep the hair in place.

The Bob

A bob works on older women who have medium hair (around chin level). You can wear a bob several ways--its flexibility gives you the versatility to match any outfit or mood of the day. After getting the initial bob cut, which angles the hair slightly around the face, you can enjoy wash-and-wear hair, if you're in a rush, or spend some time creating a pretty style. For example, for a special dinner event, blow dry the bob straight, then work a shine serum through with your fingers. If you prefer a curly look, work mousse onto your hands and scrunch sections of freshly washed hair, working all the way around your head. The bob lets you have a youthful look without the juvenile appearance of ponytails and braids.

A cropped hairstyle can be a boon for older women. The closely cut hairs work over time to mask troubled spots such as grey areas and thinning hair (when hair is short, patchy sections of missing hair are much less visible because all the hair is the same length). The cropped look is also a near zero-maintenance option for women who like to "get up and go" without messing with blow dryers and shelves of supplies. The cropped style can vary per the woman's preference; if you want an edgy and carefree look, crop it all the way down to a buzz cut. Leave a few inches for more coverage, then style the hair by combing it to one side and applying gel to keep it in place.
