According to fashion expert and writer Jeanine Larmoth, "A hat is a shameless flatterer, calling attention to an escaping curl, a tawny braid, a sprinkling of freckles over a pert nose, directing the eye to what is most unique about a face. Its curves emphasise a shining pair of eyes, a lofty forehead; its deep brim accentuates the pale tint of a cheek, creates an aura of prettiness, suggests a mystery that awakens curiosity in the onlooker." There are so many styles to choose from that learning how to choose a hat that works for you will narrow your choices.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Select a hat with a long brim if you want to shorten a long face. If you pick a hat that has a deep crown, you'll only lengthen your face shape more. A newsboy hat with a long brim, not a short one, is a great option for this type of face shape. Tip your hat straight forward to reduce the length even more. Try to choose a hat that covers your forehead as well.

  2. 2

Avoid making a round face look more round. Instead, choose a hat that has a high crown and a large brim. This type of hat elongates your face instead of making it more round. Choose an asymmetrical hat and slant it forward to make your face look like it has more angles and definition than it does.

  3. 3

Wear hats with curvy lines, such as a large, floppy brim, if you have a square-shaped face. Feminine hats look best on this type of face because they soften the squared lines.

  4. 4

Wear a hat with no brim, or a small brim, to complement a heart-shaped face. Beanies or train conductor-style caps with short brims are great for this face shape. These types of hat give the impression of a wider jawline instead of making it look even thinner than it is. Hats with squared lines work well on this face shape as well, as do hats with squared-off tops. Small-brimmed hats also work well on women who have small, petite faces with delicate features.

  5. 5

Complement an oval face with virtually any type of hat in any shape. Men and women with oval faces are lucky because they can try on practically any style and still look great. Play around with the hat. Pull it down on front or over to one side for different looks.
