Popular Goatee Styles

The goatee, a broad term in modern culture, references facial hair over the chin. Although many people think of the goatee as possessing a moustache and a full amount of hair to the chin, a "soul patch," or spot of hair under the bottom lip, would also qualify. Many modern stars wear goatees, including Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt and Omarion. Arguably, goatee trends change as swiftly as fashion, so men's magazines can prove useful in determining what goatee styles are currently popular.

Simple Goatee

The hair on a simple goatee begins at the corner of the mouth and extends straight down to the bottom of the jawbone, covering the chin. Some goatee wearers prefer to shave a couple of inches below the lip for this type of goatee, often paired with a chinstrap or a strip of longer hair in the centre of the chin. Still others prefer to remove the "soul patch," a strip of hair right below the bottom lip. This style is popular with sports players, like Mike Jacobs and Jeff Bagwell.

Goatee with Moustache

The combination of the goatee with a moustache is very popular in 2010, with Hollywood actors such as Colin Farrell, Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler and Edward Norton sporting it. This style allows for plenty of variation, although most simply it is the goatee with a moustache attaching in the corner of the lip, and hair extending straight down to under the jawbone. Johnny Depp, according to Ask Men, wears his goatee unattached to his moustache, with length emphasis placed on the soul patch. Sometimes, the extension of the hair goes completely under the chin, such as Leonardo DiCaprio's goatee in "Body of Lies" or Brad Pitt's infamous long grey goatee.

Five O'Clock Goatee

For many younger stars, the "five o'clock" goatee allows them to sport facial hair without the face-shaping commitment of a long goatee. For this style, the hair is trimmed very short or shaved intermittently. Collin Farrell has worn the five o'clock shadow goatee, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake and James McAvoy.
