The 1980s was a decade of extreme experimentation in fashion, so finding '80s style clothes for guys is fun and creative. In a time where you could wear almost anything, fashion was split into several groups. Popular street culture yielded styles of its own and for conservative dressers, the easy money and power-politics of the era provided inspiration. Expensive designer styles also became more attainable.

"Miami Vice"

This popular TV show was the last word in 1980s styling, with Hugo Boss and Versace as fashion consultants. You can often find '80s clothes from these designers in thrifts shops. The distinctive boxy cuts of the Hugo Boss suits, in particular, make them unmistakably '80s and perfect for the basis of a stylish costume. "Miami Vice" popularised the look of white linen suits, a T-shirt worn under an Armani jacket, slip-on shoes with no socks and Ray Ban Wayfarers. Wearing just the sunglasses gives a modern retro style to any outfit, but recreating the whole look is perfect for a costume. Vintage Vice fans might search for a pair of original Kenneth Cole Crocket and Tubbs shoes. "Miami Vice" epitomised the designer fashions of the 1980s that were worn by the rich.

New Romantic

New Romantics were inspired by the look of punk but not the politics. This movement started in the UK but was popularised by well-known musicians such as Boy George and Adam Ant. It was an eclectic, deconstructed, thrift store explosion, with items that had an old-fashioned feel. Clothes were complemented with heavy make-up and bright hair. Perfect for a 1980s costume, you can pull this look together by searching through your local thrift store for items, such as flouncy shirts and tight trousers. Men's New Romantic clothes are fitted and flamboyant, with a feminine edge. In America, mainstream rock bands borrowed much of their look from New Romantics and mixed it with the mainstream fashion for large suit jackets, rolled up at the sleeves.

With the hip-hop scene emerging as one of America's strongest musical movements of the 1980s, sports brands such as Puma and adidas remain a symbol of the age. The '80s popularised the fashion for sneakers, as a must-have item, with hi-tops and chunky laces extremely popular. These remain a cool way to pay homage to '80s style with any everyday outfit. A dramatic hip-hop costume, is a pair of voluminous trousers, in the style of rapper MC Hammer. Wear these tight at the ankle and teamed with a cropped jacket for the full effect.

Since 2002, popular '80s styles have infiltrated the high-street due to a commercially led revival. To look modern, the trick is to choose the right items. For those interested in dressing-up, create a costume by teaming dramatic pieces with the hair and make-up of the day. Cool retro items, popular in men's fashion include Ray Ban Wayfarers, hi-top sneakers, pale denim, biker jackets and chinos. New Romantic style provides influence with fitted jeans and asymmetric dyed hair. This look is androgynous and popular with modern teens. Perfect costume pieces include silk, shoulder padded suits, stonewashed denim, ruffle shirts and tight leather trousers worn with Cuban heeled boots.
