If you're looking for a versatile, easy-to-care for cut, then a short jagged or choppy style might be the perfect fit. There are trendy looks for the adventurous spirit and classic looks for a subdued elegant effect. Short cuts generally work well for hair that is thick or fine, and there are even great jagged options in men's hairstyles.

Pixie Cut

Through the years, the pixie cut has remained a classic staple haircut and has been immortalised by a number of celebrities, most notably Twiggy, Mia Farrow, Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and Audrey Hepburn. This short cut sports jagged layers, but softens them by allowing them to lie close to the head. The layers can also be softened the shorter you wear this cut. A pixie cut draws all of the attention to the wearer's facial features, so this cut works best if you have a flawless face and skin to show off. Recently, Ashlee Simpson has brought this look back into vogue with her bleached-blond short cut.

Shag Cut

A jagged shag cut emphasises the layers and is often accentuated with gel or other hair products that encourage the hair to "stick up." The shag often has layers of extremely different lengths, which can be emphasised with highlights or other funky hair colours. This sort of cut is often referred to as a kind of "rocker" haircut and works with individuals who live and dress in an idiosyncratic and dramatic style. Medium to thick hair surrounding an oval-, oblong- or diamond-shaped face works best with this sort of style and is often the most flattering on younger women.

Choppy Bob Cut

A chin-length bob is traditionally a cut that is all one length, but can be adjusted to incorporate jagged layers of varying lengths. If you want to really accentuate the choppy, funkiness of the cut, have layers of very different lengths cut into your bob and highlight or low light the underneath layers so they stand out from the other lengths of the cut. You can also accentuate the jaggedness by cutting into the bands so they vary in length. A more conservative jagged bob subtly layers the hair around the cheeks and chin, and utilises a soft, side-swept bang.

Men's Jagged Hairstyle

Women aren't the only ones who like to use particular hairstyles to emphasise pleasing features and de-emphasise displeasing ones. Men can sport a short jagged or shag hairstyle to combat the "round face" syndrome. A haircut whose layers sweep in toward the cheeks and down over the forehead can cover some of an overly wide face. Have your hairstylist use a razor for super sharp angles to your layers. Or, opt for the "Caesar" style. This style is named for Julius Caesar and features very short hair with all layers swept forward onto the face.
