How to Make a White Wig and Beard
Whip up a yarn wig and beard in a single afternoon. (handcrafted yarn image by mrslevite from

Wigs transform you as soon as you put them on, and a white wig and beard set creates an even more dramatic transformation. Even a young girl in a white wig and beard might fool the eye temporarily. Whether you want to create your white wig and beard set for play time or for serious acting in a play, you can make it inexpensively. Use acrylic yarn if price and time are more serious factors than credibility; use embroidery thread if you have enough time to create a truly convincing piece.

  1. 1

Pull the nude stocking over your head. Mark a line around the stocking where your hairline sits beneath it. Mark the area where the stocking's foot begins to become loose at the top of your head.

  2. 2

Cut around the hairline lines you drew, and cut off the excess foot section. Hand sew the foot section closed. You've completed your wig base. Pull it onto your head again to make sure it fits properly.

  3. 3

Cut several pieces of white yarn or thread to the desired length for your wig. Pull the end of a section of yarn through your yarn needle's eye; if you're using string, you can probably fit several pieces through the eye.

  4. 4

Poke the needle through one of the mesh holes in the stocking, and then poke it back through from the other side through a very nearby mesh hole. Pull the strings or yarn attached to the yarn with the needle, but leave about half of the string or yarn's length poking out of the initial mesh hole so you have an equal length coming out from both holes. Tie these two adjacent lengths of string in a single knot at the stocking base to secure them. Pull off the needle.

  5. 5

Repeat this process all over the stocking base until the wig reaches your desired fullness. Try on the wig and trim excess length as necessary.

  6. 6

Draw a beard template on scratch paper. Cut out your template and test it against your face to make sure it's the right size and shape. Once you've perfected your template, place it against the felt, trace around it and then cut out the felt.

  7. 7

Glue your white fun fur to the front of your beard. Hot glue two 18-inch lengths of ribbon to each side of your beard. Put on the beard by tying the two lengths of ribbon behind your head.

Tips and warnings

  • If you need curls for your wig, wrap your strings or yarn around a pencil or dowel and spray them with a water-filled spray bottle. After they've dried completely, unwrap them to see the curls.
