Sweet 16 Birthday Sayings and Ideas
Sixteen candles is a classic saying to use as a theme. (birthday cake image by palms from Fotolia.com)

Turning sixteen is a major life milestone. Celebrate the occasion using a theme based on popular expressions or create your own. Reflect the theme on invitations, and print the expression on balloons and posters placed throughout the birthday party room to create a birthday party bash that will be remembered.

Sixteen Candles

"Sixteen Candles" is a classic song first made popular by "The Crests." Use the well-known expression to set the stage and decorate the room where the birthday cake will be lit. Take sixteen candles and place them in various spots throughout the room like on a coffee table, shelves, and a fireplace mantle. Have the birthday girl light each of the sixteen candles. Then turn out the lights in the room so that it is entirely lit by candlelight. Light the birthday cake with sixteen small candles and have guests sing "Happy Birthday" to the girl of honour. Procure the song "Sixteen Candles" so you can play it while cutting the cake and serving party guests.

Sixteen and Never Been ...

Turn the popular expression "Sixteen and Never Been Kissed" as the basis for a twist on the game of charades. Have the birthday boy create a list of things he has never done, like go to lunch at a special restaurant, buy clothing from a certain store, go to the circus, go horseback riding, see a play or visit a museum. Parents should preview the list to keep it from becoming risqué. As a sweet sixteen birthday present, let the birthday boy pick one of the things he has never done and arrange for him to do it. You could also have the birthday boy draw the name of a guest to go along with him to enjoy something he has never done.

It's No Longer A Dream - I'm Finally Sixteen

Use the slogan "It's No Longer a Dream -- I'm Finally Sixteen" as a theme for a birthday slumber party. Design a logo graphic and turn it into a transfer design for T-shirts. If the birthday girl is artistic, she can create her own logo. Include the name of the birthday girl and the date of her birthday in the design. Purchase inexpensive solid colour T-shirts from a clothing store or discount store for each of the guests invited to the slumber party. The T-shirts can be worn by the guests or given as a souvenir gift. Rent "coming-of-age" movies for viewing like "The Breakfast Club" and, of course, John Hughes' classic movie, "Sixteen Candles."

Today I'm the King - I Just Turned Sixteen

Host a party for a boy using the saying "Today I'm the King -- I just turned sixteen" or twist the saying for a girl's party so that it's "Today I'm the Queen -- I just turned sixteen." Use the idea to create a spa party for girls. Purchase an assortment of nail polishes in different colours, as well as nail glitter and decals, and have the girls to give each other manicures or pedicures. Give attendees inexpensive flip-flop sandals to wear during their spa party. Create a party for guys where the birthday "king" gets to choose the activity. This could mean a day of playing video games at home or at an arcade. Get a crown for the birthday boy to wear and a tiara for the birthday girl to wear during the party. You could also make a special T-shirt for the birthday person to wear printed with the saying.
