In the 1990s hair was recovering from the teased, permed styles that dominated the 1980s. Hair trends followed the lead of actresses such as Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Aniston and Meg Ryan. Flexible hold hairspray took the place of Aqua Net and other stiff aerosol sprays. Healthy and sleek hair gained attention as the craze for frizzy, big hair subsided.

“The Rachel” Shag

While playing the part of Rachel in the sitcom “Friends,” Jennifer Aniston wore her hair in a heavily-layered medium haircut. After the style debuted, women across the country requested the Aniston-inspired cut. “The Rachel” includes layers that fall along the cheekbones, at the mouth and chin level. Blonde highlights are focused at the front of the hair. Volume for this shaggy 'do is concentrated at the crown. To style, massage volumizing product into roots, blow dry and then lightly curl ends of hair with wide curling iron. The Rachel is worn with a side part.

Supermodel Waves

Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell all made their names as “supermodels” in the 1990s. These models regularly wore their hair long, with volume and soft waves. Bangs were brushed to the side. This style of hair was regularly worn in advertising campaigns in the '90s for Revlon, Covergirl and Calvin Klein. To duplicate the look, roll hair into curlers. Release hair after curlers have cooled. Flip hair upside down and spray liberally with hairspray. Lightly rake fingers through hair to break up curls. With fingers create a loose and messy side part so that hair falls to one side.

Short Hair

Demi Moore ignited a shorthair trend after her star turn in the movie “Ghost.” Moore’s look was boyish, with sleek and shiny locks. In the 1990s, actress Meg Ryan chopped her hair into a messy shag with curled ends. Country music artist Faith Hill also wore the “just rolled out of bed” look when she cut her hair into short layers. A zigzag part completes the look. Victoria Beckham, also known as “Posh Spice,” started a trend with the short, angled bob she sported as a member of the Spice Girls.
