Medium-short is a common length for men's haircuts. It allows the diversity and styling potential of longer hair along with the easily maintained, neat and classic look of short hair. Medium-short cuts are diverse, considering how little hair is involved, and can be done anywhere from the corner barbershop to upscale salons. Many barbers and stylists use medium-short hairstyles to compliment the shape of a client's face.

Casual Hairstyles

Some medium-short men's haircuts are low-maintenance and work well for everyday situations. Layered medium-short cuts give hair the appearance of depth and body without the added burden of using product on a daily basis. Tapers are medium-short haircuts for men that are longer on the top of the head that taper to a closely cropped buzz at the neck. These haircuts allow a variety of styling with the longer hair on the top of the head without the added hassle of dealing with the sides and back as well. Short faux-hawks--a style with a strip of longer, spiked hair down the centre of the head and surrounded by a buzz--is another popular and casual medium-short haircut for men.

Formal Hairstyles

Formal hairstyles for men with medium-short hair are as diverse as their casual counterparts. The Ivy League is a formal cut named after the classic college-boy look it emulates. Ivy League medium-short hair is parted on the side, neatly combed and tapered down the sides and back of the head.

The Business Man cut is similar to the Ivy League, but longer and less tapered. Hair cropped to a uniform medium-short length and neatly tended is a common formal look that, with added highlights or some product and styling, can be trendy and edgy as well as formal.

Hairstyles with Bangs

Some medium-short looks for men's hair incorporate fringe. The Caesar is a popular medium-short men's hairstyle, so named for the Roman emperor who favoured fringe. The cut tapers the sides and back of the head, while leaving the hair on top long enough to push forward into fringe.

Other cuts that incorporate fringe lack official names though are similar in style. Spiky fringe with a layered top, sides and back that are slightly tapered create a trendy look often called "bed head" that is popular in 2010 thanks to Chase Crawford sporting the look on Gossip Girl.
