How Can Boys Get Wavy Hair?

Updated November 21, 2016

The wavy look of hairstyles is a unique style that has been long sought after by women with straight hair. It has also recently attracted the attention of surfers and boys wanting to emulate the style. While products are available on the store shelves that can curl your hair temporarily, there is nothing that will make your hair wavy permanently. However, there are some things you can do to make your hair become wavy for longer periods of time.

Making Wavy Hair

The first thing you need to do is to make sure your hair is long enough. If it is too short, there is very little, if anything, you can do to make it wavy. Hair will start to hold waves around 2 inches. Once it's long enough, spray the hair with sea salt mixed with water (available at your local salon). Sea salt binds to hair and gives it body, so immediately after you spray it into your hair, scrunch the hair up repeatedly with your hand. If you have long enough hair, use an actual scrunchy or hair tie to hold your hair together in a bunch. Once the hair is dry, remove the tie/scrunchy and separate the waves with your fingers. At this point, spray the hair with a curl-shaping gel and run your hands through your scalp, squeezing bunches of hair as you go, creating more curls and waves. Allow the entire process to dry.

If you have long enough hair, try plaiting or braiding your hair. Because you're a boy, you probably won't want to wear this out, but try it overnight. This would replace the previous step of putting your hair in ties or scrunchies, as they both constrict and curl your hair and leave it in that position for a long period of time, allowing the hair to settle and fix itself that way. When braiding or scrunching, be sure to not to undo the braids or scrunchies until your hair is completely dry. If you do it beforehand, it will ruin the effect. Depending on the amount of hair, this drying process can take many hours, so do it before bed.

Don't comb your hair after styling it, as this will just straighten it (plus, with the gel and salt in there, it very well might hurt). You can rinse the hair during a daily shower, but to keep some curl and wave, don't wash it. While you can rinse it, it is advisable to not do so for about two days. Feel free to swim, however. Especially if you're in the vicinity of an ocean--the natural sea salts of the ocean will have the same effect as the solution you applied to your hair, and for free.

Repeat this process nightly, for at least three nights. This will create wavy boy's hair that will last for some time, depending on your activities. Once you wash it, however, you'll have to do the process all over again.
