Store bought gifts are quick and convenient, but nothing compares to the homemade offering that attests to the time and thought put into the gift. Homemade gifts provide the giver with the ability to take pride in the gift and lets the receiver know he was worth the extra effort. Homemade gifts also allow for customisation in a way that store bought gifts cannot typically provide. The wonderful thing about homemade gifts is that amazing gifts are available without spending a lot of money.

Homemade Candles

Homemade candles make a beautiful gift that can be scented and made into almost any shape, colour and size. The first step is to decide on what type of wax you prefer; the options are paraffin wax, soy wax and beeswax. Scents and colours can be added after the wax is melted and then poured into the mould. A variety of moulds are available for purchase, saving the giver from having to custom make the moulds. Wicks are cut two inches longer than the candle length and are threaded from the hole in the bottom of the mould. After learning some basic candle making techniques, more creative moulds and candle displays are available for challenging projects.

Bath Basket

There is nothing like the gift that promotes relaxation, so give a bath basket to let the pampering begin. An inexpensive basket containing a washcloth, some homemade candles, homemade bath salts and a book from a used bookstore can make the perfect gift for someone who would benefit from some down time. Cheap glass containers are available and bath salt recipes are simple to follow. Combine two cups of Epsom salts per one cup of sea salt and then add some essential oil, such as lavender, to create a beautiful and pleasant smelling gift of relaxation. Add scent until it is as strong as you like it. For additional flare, add food colouring to the mix until the desired colour is attained.

Homemade Massage Oil

Massage oils add to the whole massage experience in both feel and smell. With certain scents known to have a set emotional reaction, the massage can be custom made to appeal to different interests and purposes. Learning how to make massage oil is not a difficult task and very basic recipes can be as simple as 6 tsp of carrier oil and eight drops of fragrance oil. This recipe only requires thorough mixing and to be warmed up prior to beginning the massage. More complex recipes are available that combine a variety of scents for a unique massage experience.

Homemade Desserts

Satisfying that sweet tooth may just be the perfect gift when cravings are high. Homemade desserts provide the answer to the sweet tooth craving while eliminating all the preservatives found in store bought desserts. Homemade cookies not only taste great, but can easily be decorated to add visual appeal and flair. Basic items, such as cellophane wrap, heat proof sticks, frosting, ribbon and the cookie recipe mix is all that is required to make a fancy looking and tasting gift. While a secret family recipe is always a winning choice, all that is really needed is a cookie mix from the local supermarket. Popsicle sticks can substitute for heat proof sticks.
