When choosing a birthday present for your sister, consider a homemade item that is not only personal but sentimental and creative as well. Consider the experiences the two of you have shared or the things she likes or needs when deciding the most appropriate homemade present to give her that shows her how much she means to you.

Sentimental Gift

Create a scrapbook for your sister to preserve important events from your glorious past together. Sift through old picture albums for pictures of both of you and your family throughout your life, starting from when you were babies to more current ones. Include photos of your childhood, teenage years and adulthood, along with memorabilia she will remember such as movie or concert tickets you two attended, wrapping paper cut out from an old gift to her, a cutout from a dress she wore when she was little, handwritten notes you wrote to each other, and other personal items. Paste the items on paper along with a caption under each, or write your memory of the event under it. Include memories you shared, pictures of actors or singers she idolised while growing up, and other such items that reflect the special bond you share. Alternatively, enlarge a special photo of the two of you and give it to her in a frame you decorated yourself.

Make your sister an edible gift she enjoys and can savour for a couple of days or weeks following her birthday. For instance, bake a batch of special cupcakes or brownies if she has a sweet tooth. Place marzipan figurines of two girls on top of each to depict the two of you. Add homemade jams or jellies to a basket along with buns and bagels she can have every morning, or prepare her favourite dish, pack it in plastic boxes, and have a picnic lunch in your local park.

Gift of Skill

Give your sister a special gift that reflects a skill or hobby. For instance, knit a sweater in her favourite colour or sew a decorative bed sheet, wall hanging or mobile cover. Opt for a no-sew throw or blanket for a simple alternative she can use to keep out autumn's cold. If you can paint, make her a portrait or painting of the two of you from your childhood or a special scene. You can make your sister scented candles she can light in the evening. Melt candle wax in a double boiler and pour it around the wick in a decorative container. Add drops of essential oil for aromatherapy and leave the wax to dry and harden.

Coupon Book

Make your sister a book of coupons she can use whenever the need arises while you have to oblige. Cut scented paper into 4-inch-wide, 8-inch-long strips. Write an activity over it or give it blank for your sister to fill out. Whenever your sister needs your company for shopping, assistance with homework, or any help from you, she writes it on the coupon and gives it to you.
