How to Do a Bouffant Hairstyle
Use a rattail comb to help create a bouffant hairstyle. (plastic coloured comb teeth image by Warren Millar from Fotolia.com)

The bouffant hairstyle reached its peak in the mid 1960s. This hairstyle was worn to glamorous events, perfect with an evening gown. While this hairstyle is no longer common, it's a lovely and retro hairstyle look to try. Creating the height needed for a bouffant will take some time and energy.

Instructions

    Instructions

  1. 1

Use a comb to section the front of your hair off, from ear to ear. Take the back section of the hair and put it into a ponytail that is high on your head.

  2. 2

Backcomb the ponytail using a rattail comb. To backcomb it, take sections of hair from the ponytail and comb with the comb against the grain of the hair. Continue until all of your ponytail has been ratted.

  3. 3

Brush the top layer of the ponytail only using a soft-bristle brush. Leave the rest of the ponytail alone. Smooth the top layer over the ratted layer into one hand and use one or two hair clips to secure the ends of the ponytail.

  4. 4

Flip the ponytail forward and secure it into place in a horseshoe shape, using clips or hair clips. Flip the hair around and fold to create a round shape and clip into place in the back centre. Create the round shape on the top and both sides.

  5. 5

Brush and smooth the ends of the edges of your hair with the comb. Place hair clips on both sides.

  6. 6

Backcomb one section of the front of the hair. Spray that hair lightly with hairspray, sweep it backwards and pin it to the back of the bun with hair clips. Pin the ends of the hair under the bun. Clip it into place.

  7. 7

Backcomb the other front section of your hair. Also spray it lightly with hairspray. Sweep this piece of hair backwards and also pin it with hair clips. Pin the ends under the bun.

  8. 8

Fold the ends of the front pieces of your hair around your fingers using the comb. Pin the curls into place. Add decorative clips to the bouffant if desired.

Tips and warnings

  • To make the bouffant smaller, just pull the hair tighter.
