How to make a messy bun from short hair

Updated February 21, 2017

Buns are a great way to keep your hair out of your face while keeping hairstyle chic. A messy bun is a cute alternative to the regular ballerina bun because the messy bun has a less severe look. Even with short hair, you can execute this look quickly and easily. With just a few hair products, which you most likely have on hand, you can have a vogue look for any season and any occasion.

Pick up the layers of your hair closest to your part on the top of your head. Use the rat tail comb to back comb the underneath of these few layers. This will add a little volume to your hair.

Pull your hair back into a loose ponytail, using a hair tie. For shorter hair, the lower the ponytail, the better the bun.

Brush the hair from bottom of the ponytail up, using the bristled brush. This will help "mess" up your ponytail.

Twist and scrunch the hair loosely. As your lightly twisting the hair, gently begin rolling the ponytail around the base of the hair tie.

Hold the messy bun in your non-dominant hand. With your other hand, insert hair clips to hold the messy bun in place.
