Afro Caribbean women use synthetic hair styles as a popular, cost-effective way to make their hair look longer and more luxurious. Women of all nationalities sometimes enjoy wearing Afro Caribbean synthetic hair styles as well.

An Afro Caribbean woman can change the texture appearance and look of her hair by wearing synthetic extensions over her natural hair, or attached to her natural hair. With synthetic hair, she can create totally new looks without causing damage, or any chemical changes, to her natural hair.

Though you can swim in some synthetic Afro Caribbean hair styles like braids, cornrows and some micro-braids, you can't always shower under hot water with them. This is because synthetic hair melts with high heat.

Many Afro Caribbean women enjoy wearing braids. With this style, synthetic hair added to a woman's natural hair makes her hair look longer. Braided hair styles can last for several months, depending on how much the wearer perspires, how securely she attaches the braids to her natural hair, and her own personal comfort level. A woman can wear her braided hair up in ponytails or down skimming the shoulders.

Afro Caribbean women wear synthetic braided hair styles full of large, medium or small braids. All sizes are very popular. Each synthetic braid is usually finished off by burning the bottom of each braid so that the synthetic material melts. This insures the braid won't unravel.

Cornrows are an exceptionally popular Afro Caribbean hair style. Like loose flowing braids, cornrows are easy to maintain. But cornrows may form different patterns securely against the head. A woman will often braid synthetic hair throughout the length of her cornrows, so that her hair looks longer. In order to keep cornrows looking neat, women often sleep in scarves.

Micro Braids

Micro Braids are a popular variation on standard braid styles. Micro braids are tiny and will "fall," like natural hair - cascading from ponytail holders and barrettes.

Weaves (Sew-In and Glue-In)

A weave is a full or half wig attached to natural hair. Some of her natural hair will be left out around the front, sides and back, to cover the "tracks."

If the weave is sewn in, her natural hair is cornrowed, (without any synthetic hair), then the stylist sews tracks to the braids with a special needle designed for this purpose, and thread. If her weave is glued in, hair can be in cornrows underneath, or loose. Glue-in weaves tend to last less time than sew-in weaves.
