Alternative Short Hairstyles for Men
There are numerous short, alternative hairstyles for men. (smiling guy with funny hair style image by Daria Miroshnikova from Fotolia.com)

Alternative style and fashion is something that crosses gender boundaries, involving both men and women. Men typically have shorter hair than women in America, so it limits some of the choices available if you don't want to grow your hair out long before styling it. Fortunately there are a number of alternative styles that men can pull off with shorter hair.

Mohawk

One alternative hairstyle for men with short hair has been around for a very long time--the mohawk. Originally worn by native Americans (and probably by other tribes across the world) the mohawk is when a man shaves all of his head except for a strip down the centre that can be up to 4 inches wide and as tall as you want. The mohawk is often associated with heavy metal and punk rock but it's also been worn by some iconic celebrities such as Mr. T, whose role in the A Team television show made the mohawk a fixture in American living rooms.

Spikes

Any man with short hair can wear it in spikes if he's willing to put in a little time in front of the mirror. If a man with relatively short hair (no more than 3 or 4 inches long) puts hair gel in his mane and runs his fingers through it so that the gel is a thin coat, the hair will attempt to stand back up. This will form a series of spikes. If you use a lot of gel the spikes will harden, becoming almost like armour, but if you use loose gel then you have spikes that appear to be a loose wave you can run your fingers through.

Razor Cut

The razor cut is something that should really only be done by men who already have very short hair (able to be measured in millimetres rather than inches). For a razor cut what you're doing is turning your head into a topiary, shaving patterns onto your skull so that you create contrast with an interesting design. This sort of style may look very good for those who are into alternative, eye-catching looks, but it can be a lot of trouble to maintain (including daily or near-daily shaving) and if you want a different look, you need to grow your hair out long enough to do something with it.
