People who have fine hair are not doomed to lank, lifeless locks. Thin, straight hair can appear thicker and have more body and bounce with the help of some simple hairstyles and cuts, hair products and styling tips.

Thin, straight hair is not suitable for cuts that remove too much hair. Light layering can help, if done properly, but never allow a stylist to use a razor on the hair, as this thins it out more. Also avoid cutting away too much hair from around the face, and try to keep the hair the same length in the front as in the back. However, fringe and soft, long layers can add dimension, which will give the appearance of a fuller head of hair.

Hair Products

Before styling your hair, apply thickening hair products to create the illusion of thicker hair. Purchase shampoos, conditioners and creams designed to add volume to the hair. According to Short Hair Style, "fine hair products and treatments leave special film on the hair and provide more volume by separating the hairs from each other."

Styling Tips

After washing your hair and applying thickening creams, blow dry while using a very large round brush, pulling the hair away from the head as you dry it. When your hair is nearly dry, flip your head down and use the blow dryer from behind so the air blows the hair toward the floor. Then lift your head, set the blow dryer on cool, and use all over the hair, which will seal the cuticles. Then, spray the hair lightly with a light-hold hairspray and set it in large Velcro rollers for about an hour. Remove rollers and finger comb your hair: It will be full of body and bounce, and will appear much thicker.

Style Ideas

Wear your hair down in large, loose curls to add bounce and dimension. Set the hair with hairspray to keep the curls intact. If you choose to wear your hair up, purchase "bump-its," which are plastic head pieces you place under the hair to give the illusion of body and a stylish hair "bump." Before styling your hair, lightly tease it at the roots and set with hairspray. For special occasions, Total Beauty suggests adding a hair piece, which will give the illusion of much more hair.
