Foam crafts are fun for people of all ages. Adult crafters can add depth to their projects by using layers of colourful foam. Foam is safe and easy for young children to work with and kids love the way it looks and feels. There are hundreds of foam craft ideas available in craft books and websites across the web. Most foam crafts are simple and inexpensive to make.

Door Hangers

Adults and children will enjoy this craft and several door hangers can be made for special occasions (Mother's Day, Christmas, Halloween, Easter, etc). Handmade foam door hangers make great gifts. Your door hanger can be any size. If you're artistic, you can draw your shapes and designs out by hand. Otherwise, print out images from the web (examples would be witches and ghosts for Halloween, Christmas gifts and trees for Christmas, bunnies and eggs for Easter and so on). Carefully cut out the shapes to make a template. Lightly trace around each template on the appropriate coloured foam. Use adult supervision and sharp scissors to cut the shapes out of the foam. Use craft glue to create your design.

Foam Puzzles

Kids love puzzles and foam sheets are great for making big soft puzzles suitable for kids of all ages. You can use pictures that you've drawn yourself, printed out from online or colouring book pages as templates for your puzzle pieces. Use two pieces of craft foam that are the same size (two different colours). Carefully trace out the puzzle pieces on one colour of craft foam. Cut the pieces out using sharp scissors. Firmly hold each piece in place where it will go on the puzzle and lightly trace the outline. Use a craft knife to carefully cut out the shape. Check to make sure your piece fits into its hole. Glue colourful craft beads in the centre of each puzzle piece and decorate the puzzle board and the pieces with craft paint, markers and glitter. Glue the underside of the puzzle to another piece of foam, a sturdy coloured poster board or a piece of wood that's been cut to fit.

Bookmark

Everyone loves bookmarks and, with craft foam, anyone can make a simple bookmark. Bookmarks can have different themes depending on who they are for. You can make them as fun or as fancy as you want. For example, one bookmark design uses craft foam to create bookworm bookmarks using floral wire, markers or paint, wiggly eyes and pom-poms. Your bookmark design can be 3D or it can have a simple design.

Book Cover

Craft foam can be used to decorate plain notebooks or to make handmade books. Colourful foam can be glued to the front and back of hardbound writing tablets. Shapes such as flowers, animals, sun, moon and stars and other fun designs can be cut out of various coloured craft foam. You can also make your own book by taking two pieces of craft foam cut to the same size and a stack of lined or blank paper that has been cut down to fit inside the cover. Use a three-holed punch to punch through the front and back foam covers and the paper. Tie together using colourful ribbon and decorate with craft foam shapes.
