Picking up where the 60s left off, the 1970s took on some of the flower power fashions of the hippie movement, but was also characterised by disco and punk fashions toward the end or the era. Today, 70s fashion is easily found in thrift stores and vintage shops. 1970s themed costume parties are popular at Halloween, New Year's Eve and virtually anytime of the year. Costume ideas can be derived directly from the fashion trends of the decade.

Women's Costumes

If you are invited to a 1970s themed costume party, there are a variety of 70s inspired looks to choose from. Women's fashion in the 1970s was very eclectic. A 70s party costume could include mini skirts, hot trousers or ultra short shorts. Shoes were typically platform. Jeans were increasingly flared and tight fitting, sitting on the hips rather than the waist. Some 70s fashions involved loud checked patterns or tweed, while others favoured earth tones and granny patterns with high necks and lace trim. You could easily wear a paisley or floral peasant dress inspired by the 1960s. Other costume ideas include long skirts, long sleeve tops and a large floppy brimmed hat or a halter neck cat suit with wide legged trousers. You can wear your hair in long flowing locks or large Farah Fawcett curls.

Men's Costumes

Men cannot go wrong with costumes that include flared trousers, and brightly coloured, form fitting, button down shirts with large collars. Everything about a man's suit was embellished in the 1970s, from large collars, to lapels, to the kipper tie. Men in the 1970s wore printed T-shirts, tight jeans, in addition to suede and short leather jackets as casual attire. Men attending 1970s themed costume parties should consider growing a moustache or investing in loose shaggy wig.

Disco Costumes

The disco era is an area of inspiration for a 70s costume party. Men and women can choose from a disco club inspired costume or a roller disco look. For women a disco club outfit would entail a shiny mini dress, oversized hoop earrings and chunky boots. Make-up would include blue eye shadow and shimmery lipstick. Men would wear polyester bell bottoms and a tight fitting button down shirt with a large collar. The shirt should be left open at the top with a gold medallion or neck scarf to complete the look. Also consider oversized sunglasses. Roller disco looks were much more athletic in nature. Women would wear terry cloth or polyester running shorts with a tight fitting tank top or leotard. A male roller disco costume would include bright running shorts and a tight v-neck shirt. Both men and women would wear sweatbands and tall athletic socks with their roller skates.

Punk Costumes

Near the end of the decade, punk fashion was a large influence, making for an anti-establishment 70s costume idea. Punk rock clothing of the decade rejected anything that was considered good taste. Black leather jackets and ripped, bleached or offensive T-shirts were common place. In addition, punks wore their hair in dyed Mohawks with black make-up and safety pins as earrings.
