The pentacle is an important symbol for people who practice the Wiccan religion. Some covens of Wiccan use the pentacle as a symbol of the earth while for others, it is the "Shield" where it is a representation of divine protection. Pentacles are essentially customised pentagrams with elements added to designate the focus or magik aspects of the coven. Pentacles can be made of clay or wood or drawn. Some Wiccan decorate their pentacles with gems or beads while others prefer a simple design.

  1. 1

Draw the pentacle on the piece of wood with a pencil. Since Wiccans have a certain order for creating the pentacle - one that invokes energy and one that banishes - follow the invoking order when drawing. Begin at the bottom left foot of the star and draw upwards. Then draw down to the right foot, diagonal to the star's left shoulder, across to the right and then diagonal back to the left foot.

  2. 2

Using the paint and paintbrush, carefully paint over the outline of the pentacle that you traced onto the piece of wood.

  3. 3

Add any adornments to the pentacle that are meaningful to you or are marks of your coven. Each point of the star represents a different element while the topmost point represents the spirit. Some Wiccan adorn just one or two points of the star.

  4. 4

Allow the paint to dry. Paint over the entire piece of wood with polyurethane to keep it from weathering. Allow the polyurethane some time to dry.

Tips and warnings

  • Some Wiccans cut small holes in the centre of the pentacle to place incense sticks.
