Every device that connects to the Internet is assigned an IP, or Internet Protocol, address. The IP address consists of numbers that determine the identity of the device and the country where the connection originated. Knowing the country of an IP address can be useful for website administrators who wish to compile reports based on the number of worldwide hits. Finding the country of an IP address can be done using Microsoft Excel's built in filtering tools.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Navigate your Web browser to a website that has a database of country IP codes. The details of one such site can be found in this article's Resources section.

  2. 2

Download the database as a CSV file; save it on your computer.

  3. 3

Open Microsoft Excel by clicking "Start," "All Programs," then "Microsoft Excel." Click "File" then "Open" and navigate to the CSV file. Double-click to open it.

  4. 4

Click "Data," "Filter," then "Auto Filter." The data will be displayed as filtered columns.

  5. 5

Click the first column and from the drop-down list click the IP address you want to know about. The data will be filtered to display the country name associated with the address; for example, "" is associated with "Russia."
