Hirsutism affects women only and is characterised by excess hair growth on the back, face, chest and abdomen. This hair tends to be thick and dark, differing from the hair that can be on their upper lip, chin, breasts and stomach or the fine hair all over the body. Women of Middle Eastern, South Asian and Mediterranean descent tend to be the most likely to develop hirsutism, which includes other symptoms such as acne, irregular menstrual cycle and deepening of the voice.

Take a natural female hormone stabiliser. If your hirsutism is caused by abnormally high levels of the male hormone androgen, one of the common causes, this hormone stabiliser may help. Always speak with a health care provider about whether you should take a stabiliser and how you should take it. Patients often take the stabiliser daily in the form of a tincture or in powder. Do not use this treatment if you are taking an oral contraceptive or other hormone replacement therapy. Stop using the stabiliser when you are menstruating.

Make a face mask to help rid the face of unwanted hair. Mix 2 teaspoons of gram flour and a pinch of turmeric with just enough milk to make a paste. Apply it to your face and neck and leave it on for 15 minutes. Scrub it off with your fingertips and rinse your face with warm water. Repeat this daily. After two or three months you should notice fewer hairs on your face and neck, plus the added bonus of a glowing complexion.

Drink spearmint tea. Researcher and professor Mehmet Numan Tamer said a study has shown that spearmint could be a good natural alternative for women who have mild symptoms of hirsutism. In the study, tea was made by combining 250 millilitres of boiling water with one teaspoon of dried leaves and left to steep for five to 10 minutes.
