Whether you're staging a theatre production or photographing beverages for a client, using ice cubes for any length of time can be a difficult task. Instead of constantly replacing melting ice cubes and ruining your set with condensation, create prop ice cubes and use them all day. Fake ice cubes are clear, look identical to the real thing and are easy and inexpensive to make.

Things you need

  • Heavy duty aluminium foil
  • 1-by-1-by-2 inch rectangular wooden block
  • Clear plastic beads
  • Baking tray
  • Oven

    Cut off a piece of heavy duty foil that's 12 inches square. Place the foil onto a table or other flat working surface with the shiny side up.

    Stand a 1-by-1-by-2 inch rectangular wooden block in the centre of the foil so that it is 2 inches tall.

    Fold the foil into neat layers to wrap around the wooden block. Leave the top open, but cover the rest of the block in multiple layers. Make the inside surface next to the wood smooth and without folds, as this will be the mould that creates the surface of your ice.

    Slip the block out of the foil mould, keeping the shape of the rectangle. Stand the mould up on a baking or baking tray with the open side at the top.

    Fill the mould with clear plastic craft beads. Place the baking tray with the mould into an oven preheated to 191 degrees Celsius. Bake the mould for 20 minutes, or until all of the beads have melted and condensed into one mass inside the mould.

    Remove the baking tray from the oven and allow the plastic to cool completely. Peel the foil from the cube to reveal your prop ice cube.

Tips and warnings

  • Check your mould halfway through the heating time. If the level of plastic is sinking too low, add more beads to create the correct size of cube.
  • Liquid plastic is extremely hot. Do not attempt to move the moulds until they have cooled off thoroughly.
