The character of Glinda in "The Wizard of Oz" is the good witch played by Billie Burke in the classic film. Glinda wears a sparkling, high, star-crested gold crown, as well as a floor-length dusty pink ball gown. While you can buy a Glinda crown from a fancy dress shop, making your own is much cheaper.

Head measurements

Measure the head of the person who will wear the crown. Measure around the forehead and back of the head.

Lay a piece of cardboard flat on a table.

Draw a line with a pencil and ruler across the cardboard, making it equal to the length of your measurement, plus 2.5 cm (1 inch) for your seam.

Crown base

Draw a line on each end of the first line that extends up about 30 cm (12 inches). Use the ruler to get straight lines.

Draw a straight line across the top of the two vertical lines.

Measure 10 cm (4 inches) below the connecting top line and make a mark at that point on both vertical lines.

Draw a horizontal line across the crown template to connect the markers.

Draw eight equally spaced points across the top line of the crown, starting at the top corner of the left-hand 10 cm (4 inch) strip.

Measure the spaces between the points to find the centre of each. Mark these centre points on the line beneath them.

Place a pencil on the first point on the top line and drag it down to the centre mark on the horizontal line at the 4-inch mark, then back up to the next point on the top line, creating a rounded "V" pattern between the points. Repeat this for all the points.

Star toppers

Draw eight stars on another piece of cardboard, using the star stencil.

Cut the stars out of the cardboard.

Spray the stars with gold glitter.

Make the crown

Cut the crown out of the cardboard.

Pull the ends of the crown together and overlap them by 2.5 cm (1 inch), then staple or tape them securely. If you use tape, tape both the outside seam and the inside seam to hold the ends together well.

Paint the crown inside and out with gold acrylic paint, then allow it to dry completely.

Spray the crown with gold spray glitter.

Glue the stars to the points on the crown and glue a large silver brooch to the headband of the crown, centred on the forehead.

Glue a row of fake diamonds around the bottom edge of the crown.
