Two natural colours, brown and turquoise, work well together when combined in a design scheme. A turquoise and brown palette will bring to mind cool, calming ocean breezes and the warm rich texture of island woods, making this colour palette an ideal choice for a soothing, relaxing bathroom.

Flooring

To keep the bathroom feeling light and airy, choose a light brown tile for the floor, such as ceramic, natural stone or marble, or a light hardwood floor. All of these materials come in light, sandy colours and add to the "beachy" feel of the room. Avoid dark brown tile or dark hardwood, as this will make the room feel heavier and smaller. Add bath rugs or area rugs in shades of turquoise to add splashes of colour and soft texture to the floor.

Walls and Ceilings

For wall colour, consider pastel shades of turquoise to bring to mind the open air of the beach, or paint the walls white for a lighter room. This works especially well in smaller bathrooms, as deeper shades of turquoise on the walls can overwhelm a small space and make it feel even smaller. Save deep turquoise for room accents.

For ceiling colour, consider painting the ceiling a turquoise colour that is a shade or two deeper than the walls. This will mimic a bright island sky and add height and airiness to the room.

Furniture and Fixtures

Though the most obvious piece of furniture for the bathroom is a vanity, you could also include chairs, benches or wardrobes. Adding furniture to the bathroom makes it a more relaxing space, but be careful not to add too much, as heavy pieces and clutter can overwhelm the space. One or two small pieces in a medium-sized bathroom are plenty for this design scheme. For all of these pieces, choose deep, warm wood tones such as mahogany, dark walnut or ebony. This will provide a visual contrast to the light colours of the room and add richness to your decor.

For bath fixtures like faucets and cabinet hardware, choose brushed nickel, polished stainless steel or white porcelain to reflect sunlight and enhance the airy feel of the room.

Accessories

Mirrors, towels, and containers for vanity items are all necessary in any bathroom, so consider using them as the accents in your turquoise and brown bathroom. Choose towels in various shades of brown and turquoise, roll them up and stack them into a pyramid on a shelf. Add mirrors framed in dark wood both above the vanity and on other walls to reflect light around the room. Add vintage bottles in shades of pale turquoise or cut glass to the vanity top to hold all of your necessities.
