A grandma’s 100th birthday is a major milestone in life. Reaching this age is a rare thing and you likely feel very blessed to still have your grandma around. Throw a party to celebrate this special occasion for this special woman in your life. There are a number of ideas to consider when planning a party for someone who has lived an entire century.

Life Showcase

Display objects from your grandmother's life to highlight her achievements and provide visual representation of her experiences. Set up several tables throughout the party room and intersperse the objects with framed pictures. Place them in chronological order, if possible. Objects like old yearbooks, diplomas, newspaper articles and family photos all provide party guests with insight into your grandma’s life, as well as take her back to special times. If your grandmother is creative in any way, include her artwork or writing in the display. Work with your grandmother to make a timeline of her life and make a printed copy as a keepsake for party guests.

Someone who has reached the age of 100 has a truly unique perspective on life that only a select few others in the world come close to understanding. Invite your grandmother to prepare a short speech to give at the birthday party. This provides a way to show her personality and worldly insights to party guests. If she isn’t comfortable talking in front of a crowd, have her write it down in advance and read it aloud yourself.

Hold the birthday party at a location of significance to your grandma. Maybe she’s been a devoted member of a house of worship or spent countless years working for a certain employer. Or perhaps she has a favourite restaurant that she’ll never turn down the opportunity to visit. See about renting one of these facilities. Churches, community centres, dining establishments and public parks all generally offer facility rentals. If she’s confined to a nursing home, bring a taste of the location to her.

Family Inclusion

Family is likely a vital part of your grandma’s life that means everything to her. Make arrangements for the party several months in advance so family members who do not live locally can make appropriate travel plans. Give all family members the opportunity to say something about how much your grandmother means to them. If any of the family have special talents, like singing or dancing, encourage them to perform at the party. It should mean a great deal to your grandma to see these performances in her honour.
