Princesses bring magic, beauty and fantasy to a party theme. Decorating a cake in the Disney princess theme encompasses the allure of characters in an edible form. Disney princess cakes make an ideal end to a birthday party that uses such a theme. Whether you decorate the cake yourself or use the ideas to order a cake from a bakery, the young guests will gasp with delight.

Toy Toppers

Small, plastic princess figures work well as simple cake toppers. Purchase new princess toys for the cake to make sure they are clean. Ice a sheet cake in any size and cover it with a base coat of frosting. Pink, white or lavender works well as the colour. Add a decorative border and a birthday message on the cake. Arrange the Disney princess toys on the cake around the message. The birthday girl can keep the Disney princess toys as part of her birthday gift once she blows out the candles.

Castle Cake

A castle cake ties into the Disney princess theme. There are many possible ways to create a castle cake. For a simple one, use two large square cakes as the base. Stack the cakes with a layer of frosting between them. Add a smaller round cake on top to add height and variety to the castle. Place sugar cones on each of the four corners and on the top to create the castle’s towers. Ice the entire castle and the cones in pink, white or lavender. Add vines and flowers made from icing around the outside of the castle. Place some small Disney princess figures beside the castle to connect it to the theme.

Three-Dimensional Cakes

A three-dimensional princess cake makes an impressive display on the food table. A plastic Disney princess doll similar to a Barbie doll is used in the cake. A dome-shaped cake creates the skirt of the princess’s dress. A speciality cake pan will create the dome cake. You can also bake the skirt cake in a Pyrex bowl that is safe for oven use. Place the cake on the serving plate and ice it to resemble the skirt of the selected princess, using a photo of the princess for reference. Remove the clothing from the doll. Press the legs into the dome cake so that the doll sticks out of the cake from the waist up. Use frosting to decorate the bodice of the dress directly onto the Disney princess doll.

Serve cupcakes instead of a traditional birthday cake. Look for plastic Disney princess rings at a party supply store. Ice the cupcakes with pink or lavender icing in a large swirl. Add edible glitter or sprinkles in coordinating colours. Place a Disney princess ring into the icing of each cupcake to finish off the decoration. Party supply stores also often carry plastic cupcake picks in themes such as the Disney princesses. The picks are pressed down into the cupcake to create the decoration.
