Circus theme cakes can be simple or complex, depending on your personal cake decorating skills. If you are a novice to cake decorating, try a simple design and rely on colourful candies and plastic figurines to add detail to the cake. The addition of tasty items such as candyfloss or animal crackers can give a cake a circus feel without complicated techniques or equipment.

Clown

Create a three-dimensional clown cake by using a shaped cake pan. These pans are typically used to create the skirt of a doll cake. Bake one cake in the moulded pan and another in a 10-inch round pan. Let both cakes cool completely and sandwich them together with buttercream frosting. Trim the round cake so its edge matches that of the upper cake. Wilton offers a cake stand that resembles clown feet. Place the cake on this stand or forget about the stand and decorate the clown as if she were wearing a dress. Use frosting or rolled fondant to cover the cake and create clown apparel. Don't worry about making it perfect--clowns are meant to be funny-looking. Create the clown's head by decorating a round piece of construction paper and gluing it to a craft stick. Insert the stick in the top of the cake. Form hands the same way, cutting them out of construction paper and gluing them to crafts sticks or dowels stuck into the cake.

Circus Tent

Circus tent cakes can be made in a variety of sizes to accommodate the number of guests. Create a basic circus tent by baking a cake in a giant cupcake pan or in two 8-inch round cake pans and one dome cake pan. Stack the two 8-inch cakes together and top them with the dome to create the shape of a circus tent. Cover the cake with strips of fondant tinted red and white. If you need to make a larger cake, stack the circus tent onto a 10-inch or larger decorated round cake with dowels inserted into the bottom cake to prevent the tent from sinking. Decorate the cake with small clown figures or animal crackers decorated with tinted frosting.

Candyfloss

Make a simple circus cake by covering any size or shape of cake with frosting of your choice. Decorate the outer edge with frosted animal crackers, coloured marshmallows and other colourful candies. Purchase candyfloss to match the party colours and carefully arrange it on top of the cake just before serving. Add a few large lollipops as cake toppers or decorate ice cream cones with frosting to create clown hats and place them on the cake.
