Hair combs can be used both practically to hold a hairstyle or decoratively to accentuate the hairstyles. Combs come in a multitude of colours, materials and embellishments, from plain plastic combs to elaborate feathered and jewelled hair combs. When using decorative combs, remember the adage “less is more.” The placement of one comb can add a simple elegance to your hairstyle, but too many can crowd the hair.

French Twist

The classic hairstyle that uses combs is a french twist. A french twist hairstyle is created by loosely gathering up the hair into a ponytail and rolling the hair in a circle to create a bun. Using your fingers and thumb, tuck the bun under and to the left, as you fold the hair on the left over to the right covering the bun. You will have created a natural seam on the right of the head. The seam can be secured using hair clips and a decorative comb slid into the seam to create an elegant and effortlessly chic look. Women with thick hair can use a comb to hold the french twist in place instead of hair clips.

Loose Hair

The simplest way to wear to a decorative hair comb is to wear and natural and loose hairstyle. Hair combs are flattering on all types of hair. Whether you hair is curly, wavy or straight you can allow it to dry naturally or use a flat or curling iron to style it. After you have styled your hair in the desired way, place the comb above either ear and directly behind the temple. This creates a simple and beautiful look and draws the hair away from the face on only one side. You could also use two combs and draw back the hair on both sides of the face.

Updo

Using decorative combs with an updo is a great choice for weddings, proms or any time your are looking to add some extra elegance to your hairstyle. There are numerous choices for how to style your updo and for a very special occasion it’s a good idea to consult a professional stylist for your updo. A few options for an updo include hair on top of the head with curls cascading, a simple bun high on the crown of the hair or an entire head of curl pinned up in a range of styles. Using a decorative comb works for any type of updo and the only choice you need to make is where to place the comb. Combs can be placed near the front of the hairline close to the temples. Also, consider placing combs on either side or on top of the bun or pinned curls.
