Decorating a child's birthday cake can be fairly easy. Choose a favourite cartoon character and use that as an inspiration. Decorating a birthday cake for a grown-up isn't as simple. Adult cakes with their traditional flowers and predictable matching borders tend to be boring. Create something beautiful, daring, whimsical or even wacky for your next grown-up birthday cake.

Grown-Up Themes

Some themed cakes are just not appropriate for a child's birthday party, but would make a fun and whimsical cake for an adult. An adult might enjoy a casino-themed cake. Add playing cards and even a "Vegas" sign on top of the cake to give it an authentic casino look. A cake in the shape of a beer mug or a bottle of wine is an appropriate cake for an event where alcohol might be served.

An adult birthday cake can represent the birthday boy's career. If he is a mechanic by trade, a cake that features a car with its bonnet up is a great way to honour his special day. Decorate a banker's birthday cake with dollar bills and dollar signs. A hair stylist might enjoy a cake decorated with a blow dryer and scissors.

When adults reach milestone birthdays, it is natural for them to want to reflect on how far they've come. Decorate your special someone's birthday cake in a sentimental way. Feature a photo (copied on special edible paper with edible ink at a bakery) of the birthday boy when he was young along with a current photo. You can also feature a drawing of a childhood house or a favourite pet as a sentimental adult cake.

Hobby Related

Many adults have a hobby or two that they are passionate about. Use these hobbies as ideas for decorating a grown-up birthday cake. For a woman who likes to knit, feature some knitting needles and yarn on the cake. A man who likes to collect coins can have a handful of change drawn on top of his cake.
