BioShock is a first-person shooter video game for the Xbox 360 console in which enemy characters, called splicers, run rampant and attack the player with a number of different weapons. Splicers are dressed in tattered formal wear and don a variety of macabre animal party masks, ranging from rabbits to cats to birds. These masks are also usually covered in gruesome blood spatters, making the masks a perfect item for a theme- or Halloween-costume party.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- White full face mask
- Craft knife
- Hot-glue gun
- Wire mesh
- Poster board
- White glue
- White acrylic paint
- Fake blood
Cut off the lower third of the full face mask (lips and chin) with the craft knife, leaving the nose and cheeks intact.
Cut the mesh into a 5-inch-by-14-inch rectangle.
Hot glue the shorted end of the mesh around the nose and down to where the mouth would have been. Bend the mesh into a long, angled beak, like a stork or heron.
Cut out feather shapes from the poster board with scissors, making some longer than others.
Glue the feathers, starting at the top of the mask and continuing down the sides. Once the glue is dry, shape the feathers so they curve back slightly.
Mix together three parts white glue to one part water in a bowl, mixing well. Tear the newspaper into strips.
Paper mache the entire mask, beak and feathers with the newspaper and glue, overlapping the newspaper and making a single layer. Smooth out each layer.
Let the mask dry 24 hours.
Apply a second coat of paper mache. Let it dry 24 hours.
Paint the entire mask (front and inside) white. Let the mask dry for 24 hours.
Apply the fake blood in spatters, or lightly coat your hand and palm part of the mask for a gruesome effect.
Tips and warnings
- Make your own fake blood by combining corn syrup and red food colouring. To make the blood opaque, add a teaspoon of cocoa. If necessary, thin the mixture with water.
- Handle the craft knife carefully.
- Paper mache the mask in a well-ventilated area.
