The fox is an animal in the canid family of which there are numerous species including the red fox, arctic fox, grey fox and kit fox. Known for its resourcefulness, the fox has appeared in mythologies and literature all over the world including Native American mythologies, Aesop's fables and "Canterbury Tales." Create a fox mask for a theatre production, Halloween costume, masked ball or other celebration that involves masks, such as Mardi Gras.
Things you need
Scrap paper and pencil
Thin cardboard (cereal boxes will do)
Silver and orange sequins (optional)
Practice sketching an outline for a fox mask a few times before attempting the real thing. Fox masks often have a strong, almost-triangle-like jawline with a rounded head and large, pointed ears. Some masks have large ears while other versions focus more on the snout part of the mask. Don't forget to include spaces for the eyes, and hold your sketches up to your face with the eyes cut out to ensure you can see clearly out of them.
Trace your fox mask outline onto a thin piece of cardboard, such as a cereal box.
Cut out the outline from of the box, including the spaces for the eyes.
Use a hole punch on either side of the mask below the ears for threading string later.
Paint the mask with orange or reddish-orange paint around the majority of the mask save the snout area.
Brush white paint on the snout area and use black or brown paint to create a nose.
Paint the ears orange with white or black in each of the ear's centres. Allow to dry.
Add any embellishments as desired, such as gluing silver and orange sequins around the mask's border and around the eyes.
Thread a sturdy piece of string through the holes in the mask to complete the project.
- Use brown and orange faux fur all over the mask as an alternative to painting. Add feathers, more sequins, faux jewels and glitter to the mask to make a festive mask for Mardi Gras.
