A baby's dress cake is a great idea for a little girl's baby shower. Making a baby dress cake with fondant allows you to customise the baby shower dessert and provide something really special for the mommy-to-be. 1. 1

Draw out the shape of a baby's dress on a piece of paper. If you have trouble drawing freehand, then find a diagram online, print it out and trace the shape. Cut out the baby dress shape.

  2. 2

Bake a sheet cake and let it set on a cooling rack. Place the cake on a cutting board. Set the paper cutout of the dress shape over the cake. Using a sharp knife cut out the shape of the dress, creating smooth edges on the cake. Set the cake scraps aside (you can eat these or just dispose of them).

  3. 3

Roll out a large piece of fondant in whatever colour you want the dress to be. Carefully place the piece of fondant over the cake. Press the fondant into the cake's crevices and form it to the cake's shape. Cut off excess pieces and overlap.

  4. 4

Find a piece of textured fabric, such as leather or a heavy cotton, and set it over the cake. Gently roll a rolling pin over the fabric so it presses into the fondant, leaving impressions. Carefully peel back the fabric to remove it from the fondant. Your fondant should now look like real fabric, with the grooves and contours of whatever material you used.

  5. 5

Use cake decorating paint and dust to paint on details such as trim, lace, polka dots or stripes. Create ruffles, buttons and flowers out of gum paste to add on to the dress if you so choose.
