Incontinence, the inability to control evacuation of the bladder or bowels, is a condition that affects approximately 200 million people throughout the world. The two basic types of incontinence are urge incontinence, caused by involuntary contractions of the bladder muscle, and stress incontinence, caused by sudden contractions such as sneezing or coughing. Adults with this condition often wear adult diapers to protect their clothing from leaks and accidents. If you suffer from incontinence and do not have a regular adult diaper on hand, you can fold a towel into an adult diaper to use temporarily.

Lay the towel on a flat surface. Use a towel with short sides that are wide enough to cover your front or back side from hip to hip.

  • Use a towel with short sides that are wide enough to cover your front or back side from hip to hip.

Fold the middle section of the towel lengthwise in thirds to create a triple layer that fits between your legs for extra absorbency. Fold in one side to meet the centre of the towel and then fold in the other side to create the triple layer.

Pull up the towel between your legs with the triple layer positioned between them.

Fold down the front of the towel as much as needed so it rests on your waist. Repeat with the back of the towel.

Bring the front and back corners of the left side together at your side and secure with safety pins. Repeat the process with the front and back corners of the right side.

Cut leg holes out of the bottom of a small trash bag to wear as a waterproof diaper cover, if desired.

TIP

You can also fold the towel lengthwise twice and fold the width twice to create an absorbent insert for a waterproof trash bag diaper cover.
