The popularity of TV programmes like CSI and CSI: Miami has made crime scene investigators -- CSIs in American police jargon -- into easily recognisable figures. The CSI outfit makes a great Halloween costume for both men and women because it relies on adding a few accessories to an everyday outfit but still presents a distinctive image. All you need to create the complete CSI look are a few easy-to-find bits of scientific kit and a fishing vest.

  1. 1

Begin with a set of rugged, everyday clothes. A pair of jeans or combats, sturdy boots and a t-shirt are ideal. If your shirt has long sleeves, roll them up to just below the elbow.

  2. 2

Acquire a black fishing vest. Used by all types of outdoors enthusiasts, these sleeveless vests are covered in pockets that are perfect for holding the many gadgets a forensic technician needs.

  3. 3

Purchase safety glasses and latex gloves. You can find safety glasses in DIY shops or even pound shops, while latex gloves will come from chemists or scientific supply shops.

  4. 4

Create and print a stencil with the letters "CSI" on it in a large, bold sans serif font. You may want to make a small version of this, which will go on your hat, and a larger version, which will adorn the back of the vest. Cut the letters out of the paper with scissors or a craft knife.

  5. 5

Paint or spray white or yellow fabric paint onto the back of the fishing vest using the stencil. The back of the vest should now read CSI in big, bold letters.

  6. 6

Acquire an inexpensive black or dark blue baseball cap. Add another CSI logo to the front of the cap.

  7. 7

Fill the pockets of your vest with scientific equipment. Small plastic bags for evidence, pocket torches, tweezers and fingerprint powder are all great accoutrements for this costume.

  8. 8

Pin a toy badge to the left breast of the vest. Alternatively, hang it around your neck on a chain.
