Long and luscious eyelashes are coveted by women as they are a sign of femininity. Rather than resorting to false eyelashes or prescription growth creams, one way to enhance lashes is to treat them naturally with almond oil. In other countries, such as India, oils in general are used often to increase hair and eyelash growth. Almond oil helps eyelashes to grow longer because it conditions the lashes and prevents breakage.

The Facts

Almond oil is a clear oil that is extracted from almonds. It's commonly used in aromatherapy and massage treatments. Almond oil is high in essential fatty acids, which make it an effective moisturiser and lubricant. It can be effective at promoting eyelash growth because it nourishes and moisturises eyelashes and the skin around them. It may also make them shiny and glossy.

It is best to use pure almond oil. If it's mixed with other products or ingredients, don't use it on the eyelashes. The oil may make it difficult to apply eye make-up, even after it's washed off. However, almond oil is one of the least greasy oils.

To maximise the benefits of almond oil, avoid eyelash curlers as well as waterproof mascara. Eyelashes curlers promote breakage. Waterproof mascara is difficult to remove and often requires more rubbing than regular mascara.

Almond oil should only be applied to eyelashes at night before bed. It can be applied using your fingers, but make sure to wash them first. A drop or two should be massaged lightly into the eyelashes with the focus on the roots. Massage the almond oil up to the tips. Take care to apply it with a very light touch and to not get any oil in your eyes. In the morning, use a wet washcloth and dab the eyelids and lashes. Do not wipe as that might cause eyelashes to break or fall out.

To receive maximum benefits, almond oil should be used on the eyelashes nightly. It will take time to see new growth. Allow at least four to six weeks to see the benefits.

Make sure to store almond oil in a cool, dark place. It's easily damaged by light and heat. Once opened, almond oil will stay good for about one year. It's best to throw it away at that point. If it starts to smell badly, discontinue use and discard it.

People with nut allergies should not use almond oil. Contact lens wearers should apply almond oil with caution.
