For many kids all over the world, the punk look is their style of choice. Although it may not seem like the girliest of fashion trends, many girls are able to pull off a variety of stylish looks, especially when it comes to hair. From original punk haircuts to more modern punk-emo looks, there's no shortage of edgy yet feminine styles.

Liberty Spikes

Dating back to the 1970s, liberty spikes are one of the original punk girl hairstyles. The name is derived from the similarity of the look to the crown worn by the Statue of Liberty in New York. This style, however, consists of spikes of hair arranged around the entire head as opposed to just the crown area. While it's certainly one of the most bold punk looks, it is popular among girls simply because it can be created with most normal haircuts. One simply needs a large helping of sculpting wax or hairspray to keep the spikes standing up straight. It's a perfect choice for those who need a quick punk look for an upcoming show but want to avoid a drastic haircut.

Faux Hawk

For those girls who want the spirit of punk rock in their hairstyle but aren't ready to make the commitment to a full-on mohawk, the faux-hawk is a popular choice. The sides and back are not shaved but are trimmed shorter than the top. Also, while with the usual punk mohawks the head is fully shaved except for a streak of hair from the centre of the forehead to the back of the head, with the faux hawk a girl can keep all of her hair. This is because with a little gel, wax or hairspray, she can shape the hair into a spiky mohawk. When not in punk mode, the faux-hawk lends itself well to less audacious hairstyles.

Chelsea Cut

The Chelsea cut is another classic punk girl look. It was the style adopted by many of the hardcore punk girls of the 1970s and 1980s when the shaved head look was quite popular among punks. The Chelsea cut, however, is specifically for girls in that it allows them to keep their fringe, side curls and a fringe of hair at the back while shaving the rest of the head entirely. The Chelsea cut maintains an edgy, tough look while adding a feminine touch to the style. This look was especially popular in the UK punk movement.

Bleach and Hair Dye

Along with hairspray and sculpting wax, bleach and hair dye are extremely popular among punk girls. Emo girls tend to go for an all-black dyed hair look with a few bleached strands, usually along with a choppy cut. Old school punk girls, however, are known to dye their hair any colour from bright blue to neon green while keeping it combed and teased. The most popular hair dye for punk girls is known as Manic Panic because of its intentionally unnatural choice of available colours.
