How to Wear Braces for Trousers

Updated April 17, 2017

Braces, also known as suspenders, have been a wardrobe accessory since the Victorian era. Developed by Albert Thurston to help hold up the high waistbands of turn-of-the-century trousers, braces have had an interesting history, coming in and out of fashion over the past century. These days, braces are often a fashion accessory worn by bankers, lawyers, businessmen, and most notably, by newscaster Larry King.

Braces come in two forms, those with buttons and those with clips. To wear braces with buttonholes, you'll need to sew buttons inside the waistband of your trousers if it hasn't already been done.

  1. Sew two buttons in the back of the trousers, about 1 inch apart, on either side of the seam in the seat of the trousers.

  2. Sew two buttons on the front of the trousers, left of the fly. The buttons should be about 1 inch apart, and sewn about a 1/4 inch left of the front left belt loop.

  3. Sew two buttons on the front of the trousers, right of the fly. Again, the buttons should be about 1 inch apart, and sewn 1/4 inch right of the front right belt loop.

  4. Connect the braces to the back of the trousers. This is easiest if you lay the trousers down on a flat surface. Taking the back of the suspenders, button them to the back of the trousers, making sure that the pattern of the braces face outward.

  5. Attach the front of the braces to your trousers. Start with the right side, connecting the two buttons, and then do the left side. Once again, make sure the braces are facing the right way, and that they have not become twisted.

  6. Put on your trousers, grabbing each arm of the braces, and putting it over your shoulder.

  7. To adjust the suspenders, grasp the adjustment hardware on either side of the braces and move it up or down. The braces should not be too tight on your shoulders, and they should hold the trousers up evenly, not pulling one pant leg higher than the other.

  8. Tip

It is considered a fashion mistake to wear braces and a belt at the same time. If your trousers do not have buttons inside the waistband and you do not want to sew them in, you can follow the steps above using suspenders with clips.
