Secret Santa exchanges allow everyone involved to receive a gift during the holiday season, rather than have people left out. If you're involved with a Secret Santa exchange, whether within your family or in your workplace, you may be stumped as to what to get. Coffee mugs come in handy as both a gift and a holding container for extra items. Choose what goes in the mug based on your recipient's tastes.

Coffee mugs fill easily with various snacks. Many people insert candy and chocolate into mugs for a gift, but not everyone enjoys sweets. For people who have a more savoury taste, add gourmet peanuts or popcorn balls. You can also come up with baking or drink mixes to put in the mug. If you're a good baker, come up with a mix so your gift recipient can just add the wet ingredients and stick the concoction in the oven. Take a recipe you make well, such as a dip or special kind of rub, and put it into the mug. Include recipe cards for these gifts. Additionally, coffee can make a nice filler for coffee mugs. Look for a nice coffee blend or some beans, and possibly include stirring sticks and flavour enhancers such as creamer and sugar packets.

Mini Books

While traditionally-sized books wouldn't fit within a coffee mug, many bookstores sell smaller-sized books that can make nice gifts. These books often sit near the register of a bookstore and cover a wide variety of topics, from the history of shoes to love and friendship. Some mini book kits let the recipient create a mini zen garden on top of a desk, while others provide a mini tarot card kit and reading instructions. For an extra step, you could put in a few small trinkets related to the book you picked out. For instance, find a shoe keychain to go with the shoe book or Harry Potter jelly beans for Harry Potter sticker books.

Many people use coffee mugs as makeshift pen and pencil holders, so try filling a mug with similar stationery gifts. Buy a small personalised note pad or engraved pen set to put within the mug. You could also look into more artistic accessories if your gift recipient enjoys drawing. For writers, find a small Moleskine notebook or other journal that will fit so that the person can jot down ideas easily. Other small stationery accessories that can fit include miniature staplers, thumbtacks or bulldog clips.
