Children are important part of the family and the church. Involving children in decorating a church for a special occasion or just to add something new to the decor does more than bring new decorative elements to the church. Involving children in easy crafts is not only fun for them, but it helps them feel that they are part of a larger, important community known as the church family.

Church Foyer Decorations

Children can make easy crafts to create decorations for a church foyer. Celebrate a new season with a notice board display. Help children create easy butterflies out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners. Cut the tissue paper into circles and pinch them in half and wrap a pipe cleaner around the centre to create the butterfly's body. Add pipe cleaner antennae to the creations. Let children decorate the wings with water colour paint or markers. Add the butterflies to a notice board that announces the arrival of spring and the spring calendar of events for the church. Children can also draw pictures to illustrate their favourite Bible story. Decorate the foyer of a church with these pictures by taping them to a wall.

Sunday School and Children's Church Decorations

A lot of churches have a designated room or rooms for Sunday school classes and children's church. Allow the children who use the room or rooms to help in decorating them. Hang up long sheets of butcher's paper on the walls. Allow children to write their names, favourite Scripture verse and pictures on the paper. The mural will be colourful and handmade by the children. Replace the paper every few months to start a new mural. Use Christian-themed colouring book pages to create artwork for a children's church room. Give the kids pages to colour and, when completed, hang them on a designated wall to display.

Special Occasions Decorations

Have children make easy church decorations for holidays and special occasions. Help children make easy Christmas decorations to decorate the church. Provide styrofoam balls, sequins, ribbons and beads. Younger children can glue sequins and ribbon to the styrofoam balls. Older children can use straight pins to attach the embellishments to the balls. Decorate the church Christmas tree with the handmade ornaments. Have children create a large banner out of butcher paper to celebrate a pastor's birthday or a church anniversary. A teacher can write the main message such as "Happy Birthday" or "Happy Anniversary" to the banner and the children can sign their names and add drawings and favourite Scripture verses to the banner.

Other Easy Church Decoration Ideas for Children

If the church sanctuary has clear windows, help the children create "stained glass windows" to decorate. Create a frame out of cardboard or card stock. Let children glue strips of tissue paper to the frame. Extend the tissue paper across the open portion of the frame and stretch it to the other side in abstract patterns. Or, have children colour flags from various countries around the world. The colouring pages can be displayed on missionary Sunday.
