A number of ice hockey teams and independent trainers run ice hockey camps in the U.K.; these camps are a chance for players to learn from the best and develop their skills over the course of several days of dedicated training. Though there are camps available for more experienced and older players, many of the U.K.’s camps focus on teaching young people, with an emphasis on allowing youth access to training facilities.

Coventry Blaze Academy

This ice hockey Academy runs two training camps in August of each year, with one camp catering towards players under the age of 12, while the other is designed for youngsters between the ages of 12 and 17. The camps last for six days, and feature 15 hours of on-ice training as well as other activities.

The camps are an ideal way to gain a taste of what playing for one of the Academy’s various competitive teams is like. Coventry Blaze runs several teams catering for young players in the Coventry and Warwickshire regions of the U.K., divided by age group, which take part in leagues overseen by the English Ice Hockey Administration (the EIHA). The Academy was set up to raise awareness of the sport of ice hockey in the local area and give young people a chance to get involved in the game.

Basingstoke Bison Camps

This Basingstoke team offer summer camps which cater for young ice hockey players under the age of 14, with under-10s, under-12s and under-14s divided into groups. The camp lasts for five days and is run by the head coach of the Bison's professional team, Steve Moria, along with guest coaches and assistants. Each year, youngsters are taught techniques and given advice which will improve their skills at skating, puck control and edge control. Throughout the camp, a range of training methods are utilised, including video analysis and circuit training. The camps provide two and a half hours of on-ice time daily, while office activities include the use of a gym and other training equipment.

Stevie Lyle Camps

While many of the U.K.’s ice hockey camps seek to teach players general skills, this camp is dedicated to instructing ice hockey goalkeepers, otherwise known as ‘netminders’. Stevie Lyle is both a professional player, appearing for the Cardiff Devils team, and an established ice hockey coach, having been training netminders for over nine years. Lyle emphasises the value of consistently tough yet rewarding training, with the overall goal of bringing out the potential in his students. He is aided in his camps by other guest coaches, including several current professional players.

Stevie runs camps on multiple occasions throughout the year at locations across the U.K., for example at Sheffield, Swindon and Coventry.
