Dresses are a favourite to many women of all shapes and sizes: pear shaped, full figure and the slim and slender. However, different dresses are worn differently. For example, sometimes short women wear short dresses to give the illusion of height. And pear-shaped women may wear dresses that show off the waist and flare at the hips. Wear a dress that flatters your figure, but also use accessories to help make a simple dress more fancy.

Empire Waist Dresses

Empire waist dresses are comprised of a waist band immediately under the bust. This design flatters nearly every female figure. Although the high waistline may make the stomach look bigger, an added belt hides this flaw. A maxi empire waist dress is an option for women who are shy about their legs. These dresses are best worn by tall ladies. Wearing a scarf or shawl with this kind of dress adds a fancy touch. Wearing sandals gives this type of dress a casual look, and heels and stockings offer a more semi-formal appearance.

Summer Dresses

Summer dresses vary from strapless varieties to those with spaghetti straps. These types of dresses are not only for the beach, but can also be worn in work environments. Accessorising with hats, cardigans, wraps and sandals are options to to turn a simple sundress into a fancy outfit for a picnic, barbecue or wedding. A casual summer dress often has bold prints and bright colours.

Evening Gowns

Evening gowns are traditionally long flowing dresses in one colour which most times is a dark hue, such as navy blue. This is because dark colours give the illusion of a slimmer body. However, designers are trying out bolder colours and different designs and lengths. Evening gowns are worn at elegant events such as balls and dinners. Using a simple necklace to accentuate your neck, a scarf to draw attention to the upper body or a striking belt to show your slim waist are some of the ways to accessorise an evening gown.

Cocktail Dresses

Cocktail dresses are worn for various events: parties, weddings and even dates. The length and material of these dresses vary. A strapless dress is best for a pear-shaped figure to draw attention away from the bottom half of the body. Black pumps and a formal clutch bag are ideal accessories for a formal look, while a bright coloured scarf and gladiator sandals are appropriate for a trendy, casual look.
