    6-year-old girl bedroom ideas

Decorating a 6-year-old girl's bedroom can challenge even the most creative parent because many guardians want to provide a space suitable for rest, play and learning that reflects their child's preferences. Many young girls like bright colours and patterns. A bedroom with themed decor can foster imaginative play and encourage a girl to follow her interests, whether that be ballet dancing, horseback riding or dinosaurs.

    Jungle Room

Decorate the bedroom like an exotic jungle as a means of inspiring imaginative play and fostering an interest in other cultures and the sciences. This style of bedroom is particularly appropriate for a young girl who loves an exploration-themed television program like "Dora the Explorer." Paint the walls a cheery green. Paint the bed and furniture to resemble wood or stone (perhaps adorned with Mayan-style carvings). Paint a jungle mural on one wall or hang a large poster or wallpaper mural depicting a jungle scene. Add a basket full of explorer essentials like binoculars, a safari hat and books about exotic animals and far-off places.

    Castle Keep

Appeal to a princess-obsessed young girl by designing a bedroom that resembles a castle keep. Paint the walls a very light blue-grey and overlay the base colour with a hand-painted pattern of faux stones, like the walls of a castle. Throw in a few tapestries and a big arched window looking out on a kingdom with rolling green hills, jousting knights and, perhaps, a marauding dragon. Put posts on each corner of the bed and add a canopy. Furnish the bed with silky fabrics in rich, luxurious colours like royal purple.

    Dino Decor

Furnish a room in dinosaur decor if you wish to encourage a budding passion for palaeontology. Choose green and brown shades for the walls, carpet and furnishings to evoke the primordial world. Such colours can be adapted to different themes and styles as the girl gets older. Spice up one wall of the room with a silhouette mural of either a dinosaur skeleton or a fully-fleshed dinosaur. Tyrannosaurus and stegosaurus are popular and easily recognisable dinosaur species that would work well as a wall decoration. Alternately, use posters or removable wall decals.

    Surf Girl Retreat

Create a soothing surf-themed retreat, whether you live near the ocean or not. Decorate the room in a palette of cool oceanic blue, grey and white. Build a craft table -- perfect for colouring -- with a surfboard-shaped piece of wood for the top surface. Paint a border of waves along the bottom of the room. Hang a driftwood-framed mirror above the dresser and put a vintage surf movie poster like "Gidget Goes Hawaiian" on the wall in a tropical-coloured frame. Place a leafy green plant that looks like a palm tree in one corner of the room. Place seashells on a shelf for easy listening.

Make sure you get a nonpoisonous plant. (Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images)
