For friends who are interested in fishing, nautical-themed items may make thoughtful gifts for birthdays or other special occasions. Among nautical-inspired gifts are decorative traps that can be displayed at home. Many websites offer nautical-themed gifts for people who love fishing.

Lobster Traps

A friend who enjoys fishing for lobster may appreciate a decorative lobster trap that he can display in his home. Lobster traps are small cages that lobsters enter to get food. Everything Nautical (see Resources) sells decorative lobster traps. Its lobster trap has a measurement of 13 inches by 6 inches by 8 inches and is handmade. It comes with various shells and a small plastic crab attached to it. It is also decorated with a fishing net covering half of the trap, as well as a rope and small fishing buoys. If you are crafty, you can buy a plain and authentic lobster trap and decorate it yourself. Nautical Supply Shop (see Resources) has an authentic lobster trap that has been used by either Maine or Canadian fishermen and can be decorated with shells and nets, depending on your taste.

Fish Traps

Fishermen use many kinds of fish traps, depending on the kind of fish they want to catch. A fish trap that can be used for decorative purposes is long and narrow and can be hung on the ceiling. Mare2 (see Resources), as well as some vendors on eBay (see Resources), sell this kind of fish trap. Simply decorate it with shells and other nautical-inspired items and attach a hook at the top. It can then be used as a decorative piece to hang from the ceiling, much like a windchime.

Fish Nets

Although fishing nets are traditionally used to trap fish, you can also use them as wall decor. If your friend has a house near the beach, giving him this type of net will allow him to decorate a part of his wall in a nautical theme. Everything Nautical (see Resources) sells a decorative fish net with shells and accessories attached to it. You can give it "as is" or can add more decor, such as a captain's wheel, mini-buoys and plastic fish and crabs. Another way fish nets can be used as decor is to hang it as a welcome display. The Nautical Way (see Resources) has a decorative fish net with the word "Welcome" on it, which can be hung near the door or on the patio.

Crab Trap Ornaments

The Nautical Way (see Resources) sells intricately painted ornaments that you can hang or display as figurines on top of a coffee table or desk. One such ornament is the "Old Salt Figurine with Crab Trap" ornament, which shows a fisherman opening a crab trap. The ornament comes with a gold chain for hanging and its own wood-grain printed box.
