For some women shopping for a swimsuit can be a nightmare, especially if they are looking for a bikini suit. Every woman is different. Some need more support in a bikini top than other women. Smaller-framed women can wear a top with little support, but bigger, bustier women need a top that will support the bust and still flatter the figure. It is easy to make a bikini bra top or turn an existing bikini top into a bikini bra. Bra cups can be easily sewn into the bikini top to give added fullness and support. This is a simple triangle suit top.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • 1/2 yard of lycra or spandex material
  • 1/2 yard of swimsuit lining material
  • Triangle top bikini pattern
  • Bra cups
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Safety pin

  1. 1

Fold the swimsuit fabric in half with front sides together. Pin the pattern to the fabric.

  2. 2

Carefully cut around the pattern pieces for the suit and then repeat with the lining material.

  3. 3

Place the lining on the back of the suit material. Fold down the edges of the suit material over the lining. Pin to secure the suit to the lining.

  4. 4

Start stitching along the right edge 1 inch from the right inner side of the material. Stitch around all sides. Stop 1 inch from the right bottom edge.

  5. 5

Repeat on the second side. Fold over the bottom of the triangles to the inside on both pieces and stitch a ¼-inch seam. This is where you will insert the string strap.

  6. 6

Insert bra cups through the openings at the bottom edges of the triangle tops. Hand baste the openings closed with a needle and thread.

  7. 7

Fold the material for the string in half with front sides together. Sew a seam 1/8 inch from the edge. Stitch one end closed. Take the edge on the open side and turn the string to the right side. Turn the open edge to the inside and stitch closed.

  8. 8

Repeat on the straps that will tie behind the neck. Pin one strap to the top of the triangle. Stitch the strap by using the forward and reverse stitch on the sewing machine. This will make the stitching secure. Repeat with the second strap.

  9. 9

Place a safety pin on one end of the string. Using the safety pin as a guide, thread the string through the openings on the bottom of the triangles. You now have a bikini triangle top with a built-in bra.
