How to Get GPS on a Blackberry 8520

Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on expensive GPS units, you can use your BlackBerry Curve 8520 as a GPS unit itself. With your Curve 8520, you can get the same turn-by-turn, voice and animated directions that you get with other car GPS units. Depending in your service provider, your phone may even come with a pre-loaded GPS app -- like Sprint Navigation or AT&T Navigator. If your phone doesn't come with a pre-loaded GPS app, you can quickly download a GPS app from BlackBerry App World on your Curve.

    Pre-Loaded GPS

    Press your "BlackBerry Home Screen" button to the left of your trackpad on your Curve.

    Locate the GPS app from your Home screen. If you cannot see the GPS app icon on the Home screen, press the "BlackBerry Home Screen" button again and click "Show "All." If you still don't see the GPS app icon, your phone has not been pre-loaded with one, and you can skip to the second section.

    Click on the GPS app icon from your Home screen. Scroll through and read the conditions, then click "I Agree."

    Type in your account information -- e-mail, phone number and password -- to register your phone with the GPS app. Click "OK."

    Allow several minutes for the app to register and properly upload onto your phone.

    Press and hold the "End/Power" key to turn your phone off if your phone does not turn off automatically. Leave your phone off for 1 minute, then press and hold the "End/Power" key to power your phone back on.

    Press your "BlackBerry Home Screen" button, and click on the GPS app from the Home screen to open the app and get started.

    Press your "BlackBerry Home Screen" button, then click on the "BlackBerry App World" icon from your Home screen.

    Click the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the App World main menu to open your search box. Type "GPS" or "Navigation" in the search box. Press "Enter."

    Scroll through the different GPS/navigation apps that are available for your Curve 8520. Click on different app titles to learn more about those certain apps. Be sure to read app details carefully to see if the app comes with a fee and how much it will cost.

    Click "Download" on the app that you'd like to choose. Allow the app several minutes to properly download onto your phone.

    Press and hold the "End/Power" key to turn your phone off if your phone does not turn off automatically. Leave your phone off for 1 minute, then press and hold the "End/Power" key to power your phone back on. Press your "BlackBerry Home Screen" button, and click on the GPS app that you downloaded to open the app and get started.

Tips and warnings

  • Contact your service provider about any possible fees that come with using your pre-loaded GPS app on your Curve. Although some service providers provide the app for free, others may charge you a monthly fee to use the app.
