The iPhone announces each new incoming call by displaying the phone number of the caller on the screen. If you're like most people, you don't want to memorise the phone number of every friend and family member and would rather have their names appear on the screen instead. The iPhone allows you to associate a first and last name with each phone number, but you don't have to enter names in this format. You can also use only the first name or nickname of a contact as a caller ID.

Tap on the "Contacts" icon on your phone's home screen.
Scroll down the contact list by placing your finger at the bottom of the screen and quickly moving it upwards. When you see the contact you want to alter, place your finger anywhere on the screen to stop the scroll. Press your finger on the contact's name, hold it in place for two seconds and then lift up; the contact's full profile will open.
Tap "Edit" in the top right corner of the screen.
Tap once on the contact's first name and then on the small "x" to the far right of the name. Repeat the process for the last name.
Place your finger in the "First" field and use the keyboard at the bottom of the screen to type the new nickname. Tap "Done."
