How to Decorate a Cake With Edible Paper

Edible paper with an image embossed on it is a fast way to personalise a cake for any occasion. The paper can be rice paper, wafer paper or prepared frosting sheets. If you have access to a scanner and printer, you can make your own edible image, using edible frosting sheets and edible inks. Frosting sheets are available for purchase in a wide variety of sizes from cupcake size to full sheet cake size. The sheets can be purchased with images already on them or you can create your own.

Print out the image you want on the edible paper with the edible ink you purchased for this procedure. Follow the instructions specifically for your printer. You can also draw your design on the frosting sheets with edible ink pens, if you don't have a printer.

Mist the cake with a very fine mist of water before applying the edible paper to it, especially if the frosting has crusted over at all. If you are using wafer paper instead of a frosting sheet, do not mist the cake, as the wafer paper will dissolve.

Let the printed edible paper or sheet dry for at least 3 minutes before applying to the cake. If you haven't already, this is a good time to frost your cake.

Use sharp scissors or an Exacto knife to cut out the image, if you need to.

Remove the frosting sheet from its plastic backing very carefully. Wafer paper does not have a plastic backing.

Lay the paper or sheet gently in position on the cake. Smooth edges down gently with your fingertips. If there are bubbles in the image, tap them out softly.

Finish decorating your cake as needed and then store it in the refrigerator.
