How to Make Weave Wicker Rattan Headboards

Updated April 17, 2017

A wicker rattan headboard can add a beach look to any room. You can make this type of headboard yourself by hand, using a wooden frame as the foundation and adding pieces of wicker rattan woven together. This will save costs over purchasing a similar item from a home goods store, where designer headboards can sometimes be costly. Plus, making the headboard yourself will ensure no one else has a piece just like yours.

Purchase four canvas stretching boards from an art store, two that are four feet long and two that are two feet long. These boards click together at the corners to make a wooden frame. Click the boards together to make a frame for the headboard.

Purchase two dozen wicker rattan sicks from a craft store. If the sticks are dusty, run a dry rag over them to remove any dirt or debris.

Cut one dozen of the sticks with scissors, making them four feet long. Cut the other dozen sticks to two feet long each.

Glue the four-foot long sticks to the frame, spacing them evenly apart across the frame. Attach by placing a dab of glue at either end of the stick and pressing the ends to opposite sides of the vertical boards of the frame.

Weave the two-foot sticks over and under the horizontal sticks. Space these vertical sticks evenly across the frame, and secure in place with a spot of glue at each end of each stick.

Spray paint the wicker for a unique look.
